Telstra GPRS modems

Another geebin post. I guess I'm just in the mood. This one isn't such a heart-warming tale of success tho. Today I investigated the possibility of using my GPRS capable phone as a modem on the Telstra network. I have an unlocked Sony Ericsson V600i on Telstra pre-paid. So knowing that I only have a limited amount of credit to use I left it on just too see how long it would last. I'm sure everyone can see where this is headed..
I'll let the pictures describe it.

If you take this at face value, and notice that I was disconnected after 20 minutes, Telstra GPRS isn't really an option even if you had millions of dollars and was dying of not-having-an-internet-connection.
Just over $9 bought me 20 minutes. According to Telstra, I should only be charged for the data sent and recieved but there was no data being transferred at the time of disconnection. $9 for 270 Kb roughly works out to 30Kb for $1. Not exactly what you'd call "value for money". While online my entire activities consisted of sending the above 2 messages on yahoo. I'd be better off walking back and forward from my house with a floppy disk. Daylight robbery!
Let this serve as a warning to anyone who isn't on a pre-paid phone. All your money is belong to Telstra.

Naturally, 1X/EVDO and GPRS plans are going to be hells expensive on prepaid.
If you're post paid, however, if you're planning on using any data whatsoever, you really should look into a casual data pack to be added/removed to your phone account whenever you're planning on using it. It is *heaps* cheaper than pay as you go data.
Cheers
