Back. What a lovely walk
In category General on 09 Mar 2006 @ 11:51 am
I had a great time yesterday after Sef convinced me to not just give up right at the start.

As most of you know I am the yardstick for laziness and having done no real physical exercise for the better part of 3 years, (even driving to Toowong Village to catch a bus). So about 45 minutes into the walk we started going uphill and I practically died. Sef was determined for me to at least reach the saddle before letting me give up so he suggested I just rest when I needed to and keep going. It was really hot and there was no breeze for most of the 700 metre climb to the saddle. There were also leeches and spiders which just added to the experience of me dying half-way up a mountain. As we descended into the saddle from the first climb there was a piece of rainforest with a creek flowing through it where we sat and ate lunch, (I don't know what time it was). From there we headed up to the summit, somehow losing the track and taking a much more interesting route up the side of the mountain which involved some easy rock climbing and sinking up to your armpits in ferns that may or may not have had anything below them. Luckily it was on the Southern side of the Eastern peak and despite being in full sun there was some nice cooling breezes.

So after scrambling up the side of the mountain we made it to a bit of a smaller saddle between the false summit and the actual summit where we rested, (it took us a little longer than the 30 minutes we expected to tak to get to here), and took photos. Only a short walk later (on the track this time), we arrived on the summit and took in the spectacular views surrounding us. After taking lots of photos we realised it was getting dark and it looked like a storm might be heading our way and we turned around for the long descent of over 1000 metres back to the car. The walk down wasn't too bad at all, a million times easier than climbing up in the first place. It helped that we tried to stick to the track. Even though we were going a lot faster it still took an unexpected amount of time to climb back down to the car and it was dark by the time we were walking down the road. It took us 8 hours (round trip) with me slowing everyone down and by the time we got back I could barely walk.

I uploaded some of my photos of the walk to my Mt Barney photo gallery.
