Multi PSU
In category General on 28 Feb 2006 @ 12:50 am
This is the kind of silly problem I have when I try and do upgrades for free. My current power supply puts out 400W and just can't keep up with all the crap I have in my case. The obvious solution would be to buy a nice solid 550W Antec but unfortunately the $185 is about $185 over my budget. The only thing going for me at the moment is the fact that I have a spare 300W PSU just lying around and thus springs hope yet with an idea to daisy-chain the two underpowered PSU's together. It's not as simple as getting another power cord and sharing devices between the two because to start the PSU it has to be activated by the motherboard.

a/ PSU #2: ground pin #8 by connecting grey-white wire (pin 8) with any
black wire; solder together, then insulate with shrink tube.

b/ PSU #2: split a black wire (a ground), and the green wire (pin #14);
terminate wires with female Molex type connectors (same connector that goes
into your hard drive for example).

c/PSU #1: split a black wire (a ground), and the green wire (pin #14),
terminate both ends of the wires with male Molex type connectors. (make sure
the colors are matched to each other in the sockets..green to green and
black to black)

d/ reconnect PSU#1 Males to a Y splitter which has 2 females and a
male.

e/ Connect Male of PSU# Y splitter to female of PSU#2 (make sure the colors
are matched to each other in the sockets.., green to green and black to
black)

f/ run a power cord for PSU#2 though any available empty com port precut in
the back of the case.

Rough instructions say that it is indeed possible to start one from the other but I don't have any of the necessary equipment on hand to do that tonight. Not to mention finding a way to mount another PSU in an already overflowing case.
At this point I'm totally open to suggestions or just whatever you want to say because I need to remedy this ASAP.

I figured I'd poke around the net for a bit and see what I could dig up when I found this.. /users/maz/journal/files/1141089051.powerer.jpg
I guess there's just nothing else for it.

I wouldn’t recommend running two power supplies in parallel, while they’re theoretically the same voltage and so on, it seems to me that it’s always going to be fairly bodgie and not a very good solution. I’d recommend getting rid of some of the stuff that’s using up too much power – I have a similar problem myself, and am considering whether I should get a larger power supply, or remove a lot of the hard drives and make another PC dedicated just to holding hard drives.

I don't have those options available to me. I have $0. What I'm trying to do right now is move all my computer images and backups to a seperate drive and dvd's. The only things I can really remove to save a lot of power are the CPU and graphics card.

It would seem to me that you’re escaping & somehow incorrectly, making my “normal” quotes (as used by real people, the media, etc.) somewhat entitised.

How accurate are these "recommended" minimum calculators?

Apparently my system's recommended minimum is ~355watt, and I've got a 350W PSU. Never had any power problems yet.

Interesting.

I have a CHEAP 400W. I figure it's probably putting out between 300W and 350W on a good day.

Lately I have it running again without actually changing anything.. So... waiting for it to reset.
Should see if I can get 400W out of a Usicase 400W PSU.

I suggest you kiss it and give it a bandaid. You might want to snuggle it too. Dunno. (shrugs) Always works for me.
