Geek points?
In category General on 21 Sep 2005 @ 11:26 pm
Ok, so somehow the topic of conversation came around to, why I bother with my website (seeing I am apparently so damn lazy!). The answer is of course "Geek" points. I'd say a fully XHTML website where I wrote my own content management system (CMS) so that I could prattle on about my meaningless existance has to be worth a full 50 points. Taking my total up to about .. 50 points. So then, what does something like a 2.1M high server rack (and enough networking switches to fill it) get a value of? To be honest I know a lot more people with a lot more geek points that can fit in a regular 32-bit integer. Apparently, geek is the new sexy as well. I'm sure there is a lot more to it than that but it's definitely worth pondering.

According to in-depth research (I asked my girlfriend _and_ some girls online!) sexy is "tall and lanky" and "fit" is better than "muscly", but it depends on the girl (which is a statistically terrible answer); then of course, there are always those girls who like brainless bikies. Interestingly though, the stereotype of (female) models and porn stars are different, with most mature guys I know preferring the model stereotype and most immature guys I know preferring the porn star stereotype. I'm not sure if there's an equivalent for girls.

LOL. Geek is sexy. What's Maz without the geek? (he claims just the hair)
There's still hope Kieran. You should wear a badge at all times saying you're the Microsoft Student Ambassador (I'm sure thats worth at least 100 geek points) That should help you pick up :P

Oh makes own network cables +50 points
the suggestion here at work for the rack is 10 points per RU (mine is 45 ru) what do you think?
They also have suggested that varying sizes of UPS should also be counted.

Hey Maz, tried clicking on the validator icons down the bottom lately? They throw up erros with your files. Seems like false advertising.
URI : http://maz.net.au/resources/maz.css

It is a well-known fact that I'm the worst geek in ITEE. Despite suffering all the drawbacks of being a geek (such as having to put up with the rest of you and not knowing what the opposite sex looks like), I seem to lack these precious sex-drugs-and-cisco-ios-holes "geek points".
I have a grand total of 100 points (m0n0wall router + I know how to use a crimper), plus whatever making a reference to the recent IOS vulns earns me.
I can also fix boat trailers in the rain.

I know what the opposite sex looks like! At least i don't live in the labs. I try to spend no more than 30 mins a week in there.
I really must upgrade my router.
I think points should also be given if you have a desktop + laptop (so clint can have some more), as well as howmany old pcs and shit are sitting in your cupboard (more to clint if i remember).
Perhaps points for going through skips at uni for pc junk? We need to do that again sometime.

I updated all of the CSS and php last night. Right before the geek points post. There should be no CSS errors, just a few warnings still.

How many points do I get for being a tech support person, listening to mindless idiots all day who usually just need to reboot and they'd be fine? I've had people ask me what was wrong with their computer when it simply wasn't TURNED ON... I think I deserve SOME geek points for having to deal with idiots.

I'm guilty of that one, although not for PC junk. There's all sorts of cool shit in them, such as photometers, periodic tables from 1957 and colourful umbrellas. No uni-student house is furnished without those.
I was once attacked in a bar, but that was because I was very drunk and slagging off the English rugby team.

Server +50 points
CMS +50 points
2.1m rack dont know
network switch (unmanaged) +10 points
managed network switch + 25 points
dedicated router + 50 points
so,
3 * server + 2.1 m rack + 1 * unamanged + 3 * managed + router =
150 for the server + rack + 85 for the switches + 50 =
285 + rack
