Life is like a ...
An individual is like a ...

I'm looking for metaphors to describe life and individualism. Nothing entirely cliche preferably. I'm sure I can think of something clever but nothing intelligent. What is life really like?

Life is like a business cycle: you have your peaks your troughs, your booms and your recessions.
An individual is like jukebox: there's always a song for whats going on in your mind.

nice ones. So far I've got:
It is like a figure in the dark. You stuble through life no knowing what hurt or joy is out there. You spend time looking for other people to share your experiences with. You dont even know who you really are but you can spend time trying to work it out with what senses you have. Eventually you stumble your way to the door and open it, letting in the light. You understand your existance and then you're gone.

Life is like a ... mistake.
An individual is like a ... mistake.
Yeah, I'm in a happy mood this morning, perhaps having to tutor at nine o'clock did it.

Life is like a fractal. The bigger pattern is reflected even in the smallest components. I love love love love love fractals. It's like all of life is reflected in a single person's life. Or all of one person's life is reflected in a single moment. I can't think of any really good examples of it right now though. Not only can all of the universe be summed up in a single moment but fractals are infinite the way the universe is. We could just be a pattern within a pattern and we probably are.
